about

The debut album by Dittocrush, “growth at a death pace” is an 8-track register of quiet intricacies. It consists of organic and electronic layers, swelling synths, and quiet interludes. The tracks use analogue tape samples and loops as a creative touchpoint—most beginning with a loop sample and cut up from there.

In ambient tradition, these experimental soundscapes are slow and luxuriant, organic but exacting, lucid but a little unsettled. String instruments hover over vintage synths and electronic pulses. Harp folds into a glowing piano. Bouts of cacophony make an occasional hoot. Those who contributed (vocals, acoustic, piano, steel pedal, samples) developed each track as a series of aural recontextualizations—sometimes still and nearly imperceptible, sometimes crashing, sometimes lush and reassuring.

“Perhaps, Death is Better” contains the album’s most distinctive sampling: a found poem edited from thrifted cassette tapes and set to vapory electronic pulses. Here, fragments from a long-discarded audio journal coax the audience into a state of calm yet uncanny regard. The track reinforces that perennial of ambient propositions: vibrant sonic textures—especially those made or received in a meditative state—can induce deeper listening.

“growth at a death pace” works to alternate between minimalism and movement, one minute inviting the listener to bask in a warm harpscape, the next in a manifold of keys and string. Above all, the album is meant to discompose itself when played—to amble, spark, and bloom based on the listener’s mood and inclination. - Amelia England
